What is a Double-Double in Basketball?

double double basketball

As basketball becomes more and more popular the term double-double is something many people are searching for so.

Simply put a double-double in basketball is a player that has accumulated at least 10 in two of the following statistical categories: points, blocks, steals, assists and rebounds in one game.

Most commonly the points and rebounds stats achieve a double double followed by points and assists.

A double-double in basketball is not as impressive as it used to be with players becoming even better than they were back in the day however it is still a mean feat to get a achieve this in a single game.

NBA Double-Double Leaders

According to Elias Sports Bureau Wilt Chamberlain holds the longest consecutive double-doubles record with 227 between 1964-67. He also holds the second and third longest continuous streaks of double-doubles with 220 and 133.

Youngest Player to Achieve a Double-Double

The youngest player to currently hold a double-double in the NBA is Tracey McGrady. He played for the Toronto Raptors aged 18 years and 175 days. He managed to log 10 points and 11 rebounds against the Indiana Pacers on November 15th, 1997.

Oldest Player to Achieve a Double-Double

The Oldest player to currently hold a double-double in the NBA is Dikembe Mutombo playing for the Houston Rockets at the time. He was aged 42 years and 289 days and achieved this against the Golden State Warriors on April 10th, 2009.

Mutombo racked up 10 points with 15 rebounds in that game and has not been beaten by an older player since.

Is there anything better than a Double-Double?

Yes, there are terms known as a triple-double or even a quad-double.

These terms all relate to the five statistical categories we mentioned above: points, blocks, steals, assists, and rebounds.

If a player scores 10 or more in three of the statistical categories in a game then they will achieve a triple-double.

Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma City has been one of the NBA leaders in the triple-double in recent times. He achieved 42 during his MVP 2016-17 season. In tournament play, Magic Johnson and LeBron James have been leading triple-double shooters.

Better than this would be a quadruple-double and this is a player achieving at least a 10 in four of the five categories.

Only a handful of NBA players have achieved this. One being James Harden of the Houston Rockets against the Toronto Raptors on Jan 8th, 2017. Harden was the first player to achieve a quad-double since David Robinson in 1994.

What is a 30-30 in Basketball?

A player can achieve a 30-30 by scoring at least 30 in two of the five statistical categories.

The 30-30 is a very rare and great achievement if a player can do this. Dwight Howard of Charlotte Hornets scored a 30-30 against Brooklyn Nets in March 2018 by scoring 32 points and 30 rebounds. Howard was the first person to do this since Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2010.
