SugarHouse Sportsbook Moves From Golden Nugget In Atlantic City So It Can Accept Sports Wagers On The NBA
Sports betting in the state may still be in its infancy, but some major moves and shifts are already occurring in the New Jersey sportsbook landscape.
Last week, Rush Street Interactive altered its sports betting license from the Golden Nugget casino in Atlantic City to Monmouth Park. The parent company of SugarHouse is moving its sportsbook operations to Monmouth Park so that it can offer wagers on the NBA, according to an EGR story.
Currently, New Jersey sportsbooks cannot offer wagers on the National Basketball Association because the owner of the Golden Nugget, Tilman Fertitta, also owns the NBA’s Houston Rockets. New Jersey sports betting regulations prohibit any person with a major interest in a particular sport from taking sports wagers on that sport.

Golden Nugget Hit Hard by SugarHouse Sportsbook Move
The Golden Nugget is now without a sportsbook operator and must search for a new company that is willing to locate at the casino without being able to take action on NBA games. According to public records, bets on the NBA accounted for more than 15 percent of the total sports betting handle in Nevada last year.
The Golden Nugget was hoping to persuade lawmakers to change the “unnecessary” total ban, officials said earlier this year, hoping instead that lawmakers would agree that the ban is only necessary on bets on the Houston Rockets that Fertitta owns. A similar ban at one point was implemented in Las Vegas sportsbooks on wagers for games involving UNLV, which is located in the city.
For now, though, the PlaySugarHouse online casino will continue to operate with the Golden Nugget license. Reports don’t say whether Rush Street Interactive will eventually change that over to Monmouth Park in the future, or whether it even needs to do so.
