Mountain West Win Totals – The Mountain West Conference is often overlooked when talking about college football, but this is a league that is loaded with some terrific teams. Boise State has sort of put the Mountain West Conference on the map over the past decade, but there are other terrific programs as well.
This league didn’t get started right away in 2020, but the Mountain West was able to complete a full conference slate. San Jose State came out of nowhere to win the MWC last season, and they are a solid option to repeat again this season.
The Mountain West Conference is split up into two divisions: Mountain Division and West Division, and both should have plenty of competition in 2021. Instead of simply making a bet on which team will win the conference, betting the regular season win totals for MWC teams is always a great option. Here is where things stand for Mountain West Conference teams, with a few weeks left until the season kicks off.
Boise State Broncos
Boise State comes into 2021 looking to get some revenge after falling short in the MWC Championship Game a season ago. This Broncos roster is loaded with returning talent, but there are some question marks as well.
Hank Bachmeier and Jack Sears form a terrific 1-2 punch at the quarterback position, and the Broncos led the MWC in scoring a season ago. Much of that damage was done through the air, and finding a solid rushing attack will be a big priority for Boise State.
The over/under for regular-season wins for Boise State is currently set at 9.0, and the Broncos could nearly get close to that total by dominating MWC opponents. This league has gotten better throughout the last few years, and Boise State is no longer able to walk through this league.
The Broncos play both UCF and Oklahoma State in the non-conference, and those two games are not going to be easy. Losing both of those games would hurt the chances to win at least nine games on the year, but Boise State should still be able to get this done.
Nevada Wolf Pack
Nevada doesn’t have to deal with Boise State in the Mountain Division, but there are still plenty of threats in the West. The Wolf Pack are on the road in Boise in October but are getting to host San Jose State later in the year.
Quarterback Carson Strong should have another big year for Nevada, and the Wolf Pack have an offense capable of putting up some points. The offensive line will need to play better in terms of pass protection, but running the football has been a strength of Nevada as well.
The defense allowed right around 24 points per game a season ago, but that was a massive improvement from what took place in 2019. Nevada has brought in a number of defensive transfers, and that should cut down on the big plays that always seemed to haunt them.
The regular-season win total for Nevada is currently set at 7.5 wins, and this is a pretty tough non-conference schedule for the Wolf Pack. Nevada faces both California and Kansas State, and they will be big underdogs in those games.
Nevada can still go over the 7.5 total wins, but it will take winning the West Division to do so.
San Jose State Spartans
The State enters the 2021 season with a ton of momentum after winning the Mountain West Conference a season ago. San Jose State stunned Boise State in the title game, and this team returns nearly every starter from 2020.
Nick Starkel is back to lead the Spartans on offense at the quarterback position, and this team has a stable of running backs ready to go. Scoring points won’t be an issue, but the offense still won’t be as good as the defense.
San Jose limited opponents to less than 20 points per game a season ago, and that defense was a big reason that they won the MWC title. This should be another great year for that unit, and they will shut down some of the weaker teams.
The win total is set at just 7.5 wins, and that feels like a sign of disrespect for San Jose State. The Spartans should at least get to eight wins and have another shot to win the conference. We have added some more useful information covering Mountain West Win Totals below.
Wyoming Cowboys
Wyoming is another team that has its win total set at 7.5 games, and the Cowboys are looking for a bounce-back season after going just 2-4 a season ago. Injuries plagued Wyoming in 2020, but this team should be fully healthy this season.
The Cowboys don’t have a daunting non-conference schedule, and that should allow them to bank some wins before conference play begins. Wyoming is a popular surprise pick to win the MWC, but a lot would have to go right for that to happen.
This is a team that should be able to run the ball well, and that will take some pressure off of the defense. Getting stops will be a challenge for Wyoming against some of the top teams in the MWC, but they will try to outscore every opponent.
Winning the MWC doesn’t seem like a real possibility for Wyoming as they still aren’t as solid as the three teams listed above. Rest of the Conference
The top four teams in the MWC seem pretty locked in, but there are some other programs that have challenged for a title in the past. The problem will be trying to find a way to upset the top-four teams, and that is going to be an issue.
Hawaii (7.0 wins), San Diego State (6.5 wins), and Air Force (6.5 wins) are the next three teams on the list, and each should get right around seven wins. It’s going to take an upset win or two to get to that total, but at least two of these teams should be able to get there.
The rest of the teams in the conference will need to pick up some wins in non-conference action if they want to go over the regular-season win total. Fresno State (6.0 wins) and Utah State (3.5 wins) are two other teams that have what it takes to go over.
Colorado State (5.0 wins), New Mexico (4.5 wins), and UNLV (1.5 wins) are going to have their work cut out for them this season. These three teams are going to fall short of the win total, even though those totals aren’t very high.
Expect a Competitive 2021 Season
The odds say that this league should be won by Boise State this season, but that was the case a season ago as well. Don’t expect any team to run the table in the MWC this season, and it is going to be a crowded group at the top of the standings.
Boise State is the betting favorite to win the MWC at +115, which makes them a pretty clear top pick. Nevada is actually next on the list at +400, followed by a trio of teams at +800.
San Jose State, Wyoming, and Fresno State are all listed at +800 to win the MWC, and one team from this group could emerge as a favorite once play begins. The next set of teams checks in at +1100, which would signal that this could be a five-team race.
Boise State is -400 to win the Mountain Division, and Wyoming is next at +400. In the West, Nevada is the favorite at +175, while San Jose State at Fresno State are both at +300.
